Responsible Gaming

Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is never income, and it is never a route out of a loss. This page sets out the controls available to you, the warning signs worth watching for, and where to get free confidential help in the United Kingdom.

18+

It is a criminal offence for anyone under 18 to gamble in the United Kingdom. Every operator covered on this website must verify your age and identity before your account can be funded. If a child has access to your device, use parental filtering software such as Net Nanny or Qustodio, and never save your account credentials in a shared browser.

Rules worth keeping

Eight habits that keep it entertainment.

01

Set a budget first

Decide the amount before you deposit, treat it as the cost of an evening out, and stop when it is gone.

02

Never chase a loss

Increasing stakes to recover money is the single most reliable way to lose more of it.

03

Use a deposit limit

Set it on day one. Tightening a limit applies immediately; loosening one is deliberately slow.

04

Set a time limit

Reality checks and session timers interrupt the drift. Switch them on before you need them.

05

Never borrow to gamble

Credit card deposits are banned in Great Britain for exactly this reason. Do not work around it.

06

Stay sober and rested

Alcohol, stress and tiredness all wreck judgement about stake size.

07

Take real breaks

Cooling-off periods of 24 hours to six weeks are free and available at every UK-licensed operator.

08

Talk to someone

Secrecy is the warning sign that matters most. Naming the problem out loud is where it stops.

Warning signs

  • Gambling with money set aside for rent, bills, food or debt repayment
  • Borrowing, selling possessions or hiding transactions to fund a session
  • Lying to family, friends or colleagues about how much time or money is involved
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or low when not gambling
  • Increasing stakes to feel the same level of excitement
  • Repeatedly trying to cut back and failing
  • Missing work, study or family commitments
  • Gambling to escape stress, loneliness or low mood rather than for entertainment

If several of these sound familiar, treat it seriously. Help is free, confidential, and does not require you to hit a crisis first.

Blocking software and bank controls

Self-exclusion works best alongside a technical block. Gamban and BetBlocker both restrict access to gambling websites across your devices, and BetBlocker is free. Most UK banks, including Monzo, Starling, Lloyds, Barclays, NatWest, HSBC and Santander, offer a gambling transaction block that can be switched on from the banking app, usually with a mandatory delay of 48 to 72 hours before it can be switched off again.

Support for family and friends

Gambling harm affects households, not just individuals. GamAnon runs meetings specifically for family members, GamCare offers dedicated support for affected others, and the National Gambling Helpline will speak to anyone worried about someone else. You do not need the gambler present to ask for advice.

Our commitment

We only cover operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission and connected to GAMSTOP. We do not publish content aimed at anyone under 18, we do not present gambling as a solution to financial difficulty, and we do not describe outcomes as guaranteed, risk-free or predictable. Safer gambling tooling carries a 20 per cent weighting in every score we publish, which means an operator that hides its limits controls cannot reach the top of our table.
